120 Liver Resection: A Four Year Experience




Abstract
Recently, the development of imaging technique, advanced procedure of liver resection and better understanding of the pre and postoperative care have resulted in a reduction of operative mortality to lesser than 10%. During four years from
January
1988
to December 1991, 120 liver resections were performed at the Department of Surgery, Inje University Pusan Paik Hospital. Liver resection was 19 cases in 1988, 21 in 1989, 35 in 1990, 45 in 1991. There were 64 males and 56 females, age ranged from
26 to
72 years and the mean age was 48.8 years. Indications for resection were 33 malignant tumors, eight benign tumors, 64 intrahepatic stones, 13 bile duct carcinomas and two trauma patients. There were 20 patients who underwent right lobectomy, 27
left
lobectomy, six extended right lobectomy, one extended left lobectomy, 37 lateral segmentectomy, one medial segmentectomy, 20 subsegmentectomy and eight partial effusions in eight, subphrenic collections in six, wound infection in five,
postoperative
bleeding in three, toxic hepatitis in one, liver failure in four and ulcer bleeding in two patients. There patients died of liver failure, postoperative bleeding and ulcer bleeding, and the operative mortality rate was 2.5%.
